Tour Details
We begin our itinerary with a two-night stay in the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, one of the most diverse cities in the country. The city of Slum Dog Millionaire fame provides a fascinating introduction to modern India: we’ll visit an array of sights and experience a vivid urban culture. On our third day we’ll rise early to take the train inland to the historic Maharashtran city of Aurangabad, our base for a full-day visit to the world-famous caves at Ajanta and Ellora.
About 100km apart, there are a total of 63 caves, which date back from the 2nd century BC to about 650 AD The caves at Ajanta are all Buddhist, while those at Ellora are a mixture of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain. These were crafted by hand, with only a hammer and chisel. While the Ajanta caves are rich in paintings and sculpture, the Ellora caves are renowned for their extraordinary architecture. It’s a genuinely awe-inspiring experience.
We’ll return to Mumbai by train – always an enjoyable way to experience the real India – before flying south to Goa for a four-night stay. It’s wonderful place to relax, with sandy beaches fringed by palm trees and warm tropical waters. There’s also a great deal of local history to explore – the crumbling forts, old churches and colonial architecture left by the Portuguese.
