Tour Details

Our tour begins in Kolkata, one of India’s great cities, a booming, vibrant metropolis that also offers a visual feast of colonial architecture – with more than a few fine buildings in photogenic states of semi-collapse. On day two we take the short flight east to Guwahati, the capital of Assam, where we’ll visit a wonderfully scenic Hindu temple high above the city. Later there’s the chance to enjoy a mesmerising cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra River, the great waterway that dominates this part of India as it surges down from Tibet to the Bay of Bengal.

We’ll then drive south into the misty hills of Meghalaya, arriving in the charming hill station of Shilong for a two-night stay. Shillong and surroundings, with a refreshingly cool climate, is often referred to as the Scotland of the East, and the town was much loved by homesick Brits back in the days of the Raj. We’ll take a trip to Cherrapunjee on the second day, a place famed for having the wettest climate in the world, stopping at Nohkalikai waterfalls (cascading some 335 metres, this is the fourth-tallest waterfall in the world) and some impressive limestone caves.

The final leg of our northeastern journey takes us to Kaziranga National Park in Assam, famous for its population of one-horned rhinoceros; we will have many chances to spot these amazing creatures either on jeep safari or on a thrilling elephant ride into the park. After two nights, we’ll return to Guwahati to board our flight back to Kolkata and the end of the tour.
