Tour Details

To reach the Garhwal Himalayas, we drive north from Delhi to the town of Rishikesh, famous as the hangout of the Beatles back in the 1960s and these days a laid-back centre for yoga as well as being a major Hindu pilgrimage destination thanks to its location on the sacred river Ganges.

The road north ascends through attractive foothills to reach Joshimath, known as the gateway to the Valley of Flowers. Our trek starts from the nearby trail-head at Govindghat: we’ll hike down to the remote village of Ghangaria, the base camp for all excursions into the valley. The following day we climb up to the fabled Valley itself, to spend a wonderful afternoon amid the wildflower-filled meadows and fabulous mountain views.

The next highlight of our trek is Hemkund lake, at 4,329 metres. It’s a steep 6km ascent, but worth all the effort: the lake is absolutely stunning, its blue-green waters reflecting the seven encircling snow-clad peaks and adjoining glaciers. Hemkund Sahib is a famous pilgrimage site for Sikhs and truly a spectacular natural setting.

After a gentle descent back to Govindghat, we’ll retrace our steps back to Delhi for a final day’s sightseeing.
