| Ladakh Region |
 |
Ladakh, the land of jagged peaks and barren landscapes on the indian side of tibetan plateau is awe-inspiring. Hidden behind its arid and forbidding facade is an ancient civilization and captivating people. Beyond its old frontiers lies the land of wilderness with its unaltered character and overwhelming natural beauty beckoning the most inquisitive and adventurous of travelers.
Ladakh occupies the western end of the Tibetan plateau and is often referred to as "Little Tibet." Its predominantly Buddhist people are of Tibetan origin and most of them still dress in the traditional robes, stove pipe hats and curious felt boots with turned-up toes.
Ladakh lies at altitudes ranging from about 9,000 feet (2750m) at Kargil to 25,170 feet (7,672m) at Saser Kangri in the Karakoram. Thus summer temperatures rarely exceed about 27 degree celcius in the shade, while in winter they may plummet to minus 20 degree celcius even in Leh.
Buddhism was brought to Ladakh by Mons settlers who populated the Indus Valley. The predominant religion in Ladakh and Zanskar is Mahayana Buddhism. The gompas, often situated on prominent outcrops and on the tops of hills are a feature of the landscape. There is also a significant population of Shia Muslims.
Ladakh region was opened to tourists in 1975. |
